From Precarious Paper to a Permanent Digital Heirloom
The greatest threat to your printed photos is their physical nature. They can be lost to fire or flood, and they degrade slowly but surely in storage. Mailing these one-of-a-kind memories to a bulk scanning facility adds unnecessary risk and an impersonal touch. Because I believe your history deserves personal care, every photo you entrust to me is meticulously scanned by me, Dave, right here in Colwood. I liberate these moments from their precarious state, creating a beautiful, organized digital library that truly protects your family’s story.
I understand that your photo collection is unique, containing a mix of formats collected over decades. Therefore, I offer specialized scanning services tailored to each type, using high-resolution professional equipment to ensure the best possible result. I use both an Epson Perfection V600 flatbed scanner for delicate or oversized items and an Epson FastFoto 680W for efficiently handling large collections of loose prints.
The Importance of Archival-Grade Resolution
The quality of your digital archive depends entirely on the resolution at which it is scanned. For most loose photos intended for sharing on screens, 600 Dots Per Inch (DPI) provides excellent clarity. For photos in albums, or any image you may wish to enlarge or restore, I scan at an archival-grade 1200 DPI. This higher resolution captures microscopic detail, creating a true digital master file that serves as a permanent time capsule. You can learn more about how this works by reading about Suggested Internal Link: my meticulous scanning process.
Ultimately, creating a high-quality digital file is the first step in long-term preservation. Authoritative bodies on the subject provide excellent resources for anyone looking to maintain their digital files for the future. For instance, you can find helpful guidelines on the Suggested Outbound Link: Library and Archives Canada digital preservation guide. My service provides you with the foundational, high-quality files you need to secure your family’s legacy.

Patricia B.
Twelve falling-apart photo albums sat in my closet for years, taunting me. Every time I opened one, another picture would flutter to the floor. Dave handled each album like it contained state secrets and now those memories live safely on my computer.

The truest echo of the past isn’t a picture, but the sound of a voice, reaching forward through the years to tell its story.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you offer basic color correction?
Yes, my scanning process includes basic color correction to enhance the vibrancy and accuracy of the digitized image, faded colors won’t look as faded in the digital version.

Can you scan very old, fragile, or torn photos?
Yes. Flatbed scanning is very gentle on old photographs. I can scan fragile photos with great care. While I cannot physically repair a torn photo, the digital copy can often be edited to minimize the appearance of tears or creases.

What resolution do you scan at?
I scan all photos at a minimum of 600 DPI for loose photos and 1200 DPI for others, which is excellent for archiving, sharing online, and creating new prints. If you have specific needs for higher resolution, we can discuss that during the consultation.
